The overworld map is broken down into locations that contain either random battles or story battles. For those of you unfamiliar with SRPGs, Luminous Arc gives you a handful a characters that become your units.
That’s not to say I don’t like experimental SRPGs, but only that I welcome returns to the basic formula as well as diversions from it. For me, it was a much welcomed return to the solid foundations of all SRPGs.
There is nothing in Luminous that has not been seen in another SRPG this may be either something you welcome or something you disdain. If you have ever played a SRPG (Strategy RPG), then you will know how the gameplay in Luminous Arc works. Something isn’t quite right, and the Garden Children are determined to go after the witches to figure out just what is mere tale and what is truth. Meanwhile another witch has been spotted terrorizing a village. But the group runs into a strange girl by the name of Lucia, who appears to be a witch herself, but unlike the tales, she isn’t interested in harming humans. The Luminous Church has called on a special group of youths called the Garden Children to help aid in the fight against the fiends. Something sinister has began to stir monstrous fiends plague the countryside and witches, the harbingers of destruction, have began to appear. Fans of the strategy RPG genre will definitely want to check this one out. Those that wanted something more in its predecessor will surely be pleased. The story is engaging and the characters are lively and fun. While not in any way groundbreaking, Luminous Arc 2 comes together as a wholly enjoyable experience. Nothing combat-wise in Luminous Arc 2 will require serious thought, but that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable. Some of the key battles had me restarting from save points a couple of times, but these instances were probably due to my careless charging without a plan. Thankfully, your character also becomes stronger, but a few of these battles seemed unnecessary. Every time they were defeated, they managed to pop up later, most times stronger than the previous. I did grow tired of fighting a couple of key enemy groups more than once. The strategy never gets too complex, and there’s just enough of a challenge to keep things moving. You may find that some enemies have unfairly strong attacks, but success against these foes is really an issue of steering clear of them until you’ve charged up an equally strong attack. With the large amount of dialogue in this game, most of it had to go unspoken, but there’s just enough spoken lines there to spice things up.Įarly on, the battles in LA2 aren’t that difficult, but they manage to ramp up about a quarter of the way in. The story is highlighted by spoken key lines of decent quality. Don’t expect anything groundbreaking, but it definitely works as far as entertainment goes. In all, it’s a very colorful cast, and you’ll find yourself being drawn into the story as the characters grow on you.Īnd the story itself manages to have a few unexpected twists and turns. There’s also an artistic magazine editor/otaku that’s always trying to photograph every female. There’s a busty, always-thirsty water-obsessed witch that wears a shell on her head. Oh, and a mini-chef that attacks with a kitchen beater. This time you have the world’s most powerful witches on your team. You’re not just a bunch of kids on a mission to save the world. It seems that there was some real work done here to help these characters appear a bit deeper than your stereotypical ragtag group of adventurers.
